  • Jack Speight was the son of Sydney Rhodes Speight and Ellen Speight, of Auckland, New Zealand.

He was the youngest of eight children.

Family note that three brothers served in two world wars - Sidney (57840) and Roy in WW1; in WW2 Jack Speight (438873) who was killed in action.

Was employed as a builder on Civic Theatre, Auckland.

Jack was keen on boating, fishing, shooting and rugby. He enjoyed dances, meeting girls and social life in general.

He had a good sense of humour. Once when out shooting with two of his brothers, one of his brothers pump action Winchester rifle, with no safety catch accidentally discharged. The bullet hit the ground so near Jack's face (he was crawling on the ground) that it sprayed dirt on his face. Among other things he told his brother to get a better rifle and a periscope if he wanted to be able to shoot over the hill.

24 Battalion, A Company were in the line north of Forli on the banks of the Senio River between two small villages, Claretta and Gessi. On 28 February 1945 Jack was out on patrol with some of his platoon when a trip wire triggered a land mine and he was blown up. Very badly injured, his death 10 days later on 10 March 1945 was the case of great sorrow to his family. Jack Speight - Ever Remembered.

Jack was actually 37 years old at time of his death, but his grave in Forli shows his age as 35. AWMM
