  • Lewis Squire was the eldest son of Bertram Charles and Louisa Jane Squire of Kawakawa, Bay of Islands. He was born at Kawakawa and educated at the District High School there.

    On leaving school he joined the Whangarei Railways staff until his enlistment in the RNZAF at the age of 19.
