    Gunner John Hutchin, reported in the above list as having died of wounds, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Hutchin, Gisborne, was one of the first in Gisborne to enlist on the outbreak of war, but at that time he failed to Pass the medical board. After a transfer to Whakatane in the Native Department he enlisted once more, and left New Zealand in April, 1940, for .the Middle East.

    Upon completing his education at Wellington College, Gunner Hutchin joined the staff of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, before taking a position with the Native Department. Prior to the war, he was a member of Old Boys B junior Rugby team which was so successful for some years.
