    • He was the son of Stanley Eric and Kathleen Doris Shaw (nee Winfield), of New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand AWMM
    • David Winifred Shaw was born on 23 July 1919 and worked at the bank of New Zealand in New Plymouth after he left school. H enlisted with the Royal New Zealand Navy in July 1941 as a Telegraphist. He received training in New Zealand being sent to England for more training. David was then drafted for sea duties to sail as a trainee crew member on the HMS Hecla. It appears that the Hecla had a leading role convoying 19 ships on a route around the Cape of Good Hope when she struck a mine on 15 May 1942. She was badly damaged in the explosion and 26 of her crew were killed, including David Shaw. He was buried at sea. Public - Louise - Researcher - 22 February 2020 - West, J. (1995). Lest We Forget.
