  • Corporal Stewart, along with the Platoon Commander and Private Thomas Percy Cooper volunteered to get the wounded from the tight corner in which they were caught on Vella Lavella Island (Solomons). In carrying out this most courageous act, both Corporal Stewart and Private Cooper were killed. The A company withdrew and spent the night with B and C Companies. It is unknown whether Corporal Stewart or Private Cooper received a posthumous award for bravery?
