  • Sixth child (of seven) of Clement Sigley and Kate Ryland Sigley (nee Chambers). Clement Sigley was born in Nelson, and was a retired civil servant by the time of Peter's enlistment.

Attended Waimataitai School in Timaru (1926-28), then Timaru Boys High School (1928-29) and Palmerston North Boys High (1929-34). Despite having five years high school education, he didn't sit for University Entrance. He passed the Public Service Entrance Examination.

In 1930, age fifteen, Peter was employed by the Dominion Daily Newspaper to collect money and perform general newspaper work. He left this job in 1937 citing "pressure of work in another position". He also managed a service station (1933-34) for L Plimmer, Company Secretary of Palmerston North. When this business was sold, Peter worked for Vacuum Products (NZ) Ltd, a canister making and food packing factory, as a factory worker, storeman, and mechanic. He was a foreman by the age of 21.

At the time of his enlistment, Peter Sigley was a British subject.

He belonged to the Middle Districts Aero Club, Palmerston North.

While in the Civil Reserve of Pilots, he accumulated 18 hours dual and 21 hours solo flying time, and passed his test for the "A" Flying Licence.

Peter applied for a short service commission in the RAF in January 1939, but was unsuccessful due to the outbreak of hostilities. He applied for war service in the RAF Volunteer Reserve on 11 September 1939. He was granted a temporary commission of Acting Pilot Officer on 20 September 1939 while training with the RNZAF, and posted to the Ground Training School, Rongotai, Wellington. He was transferred to No. 1 Service Flying Training School, Wigram, Christchurch, on 24 October 1939, and was subsequently awarded his flying badge in 1 January 1940.

He embarked for the United Kingdom in February 1940.

On arriving in England on 12 April 1940, Peter reported to RAF Depot, Uxbridge, then proceeded to No. 1 Flying Practice Unit, Meir, Staffordshire on 29 April. He was then posted to No. 12 Operational Training Unit, Benson, Oxfordshire, on 12 May 1940, for training on battle fighter aircraft.
