  • I love my Pop and remain very proud of him always. I have just seen Maurice Shadbolt's play at the Wigram Air Force Museum called Once on Chunuk Bair and Pop was mentioned in the programme as having contributed to the reminisces upon which the play was based. Pop has a chapter in Maurice Shadbolt's book also called Voices of Gallipoli. I so wish that I had talked to him more about those memories but it is great that he has left a legacy in print and I have some of his poetry books as well. Pop took shrapnel in his foot from Chunuk Bair to his grave but was stoic always. I have nothing but happy memories of visiting my Nana & Pop (my Mum's parents) in my childhood and I miss them both to this day. Pop was a real character and taught us all (my sister & four brothers) to play crib. He remained sharp as a tack & could recite Nana's bowling scores until the end. RIP Pop xx

  • Pop Johns was my granddad, a real character in my early years and much loved by the families he 'presided' over. I remember Pop telling me once about getting to the top of Chunuk Bair, taking pot shots at the Turks within range, first the one on the right, then the left, then the centre, the left again, back to the right... As a young boy, I was impressed at what he'd achieved, knowing that few had gotten as far as he did. With every passing Anzac day, I'm reminded just how hard it was for the NZ soldiers fighting at Gallipoli and my respect for what Pop achieved at that time, under those conditions, grows yearly. Today my daughter, Alaina, a Corporal in the Air Training Cadets attended the dawn parade here in Nelson. My wife Diane and I were there as well - to remember Pop.
