    Mr Corkill was 54 years old on enlistment but stated his age as 43 years and six months. He embarked from Wellington, New Zealand 12 February 1917. Disembarked at Plymouth, England 2 May 1917. Left Sling Camp for France 23 July 1917. On 29 October 1917 he was classified unfit for further service from an aggravated pre-enlistment condition and he embarked for New Zealand on the RUAHINE on 16 November 1917.



    He was the son of William Corkill (who was born on the Isle of Man) and Margaret ....(who was born in Ireland). He married Louisa Sherock of Picton at Picton. Louisa died in 1900 and was interred in Palmerston North.



    They had five children: 1. Louisa: born 30 July 1890 (died 1988 aged 97 years). Louisa married Jock Eddie but they had no children.

    2. John Edward: born 1892. Also served in Gallipoli in WWI. Interred Morrinsville Soldiers Section. He married Jessica and they had no children.

    3. Violet Margaret: born 23 April 1894. Died at Taihape, 5 May 1996 aged 102.

    4. George: born 1897. Died 1942 while serving with Rhodesian Forces Mounted Unit in North Africa. Not married.

    5. Daisy Mary: born 8 August 1899. Married W. Murray Morriss at Eketahuna in 1926. They had three sons. AWMM
