      London Gazette, 9 December 1916, p12058, Rec No 117: "Action Goose Alley, Fleurs Trench and Drop Alley 20th and 21st September 1916. During the night of 20th to 21st September, when the 2nd Canterbury Battallion was twice driven out of Goose Alley and Drop Alley, before finally taking it, this man formed one of a garrison of a post on the right flank of the position which became isolated, and the garrison with the exception of Private Anderson retired. Private Anderson stuck to his post under extreme pressure after the remainder had left, until he himself was eventually compelled to retire, Private Anderson then reported to a Sergeant on the other flank and continued to do good work there."
