    • Sidney Cleary was the son of John and Lucy Cleary, of 205 Harris St., Gisborne, New Zealand. AWMM
    • Circumstances connected with the death of Private S. Cleary, who left Gisborne with the 14th Reinforcements, are related in a letter has been received by Mr. J. Clearv from the Rev. G. Kennedy Tucker, written from the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, France, and in which he says "It is with -deepest sorrow I have to inform you of the sad though glorious death of your son, Private S. Cleary, Please accept my very sincere sympathy to you in your great bereavement. He was brought into the hospital on the 30th of last suffering from wounds in his the leg received in action and although every thing possible was done he passed away the following day. I saw him, and did what I could do to comfort him. You will be glad to know that he died quite peacefully and I laid him to rest in a little cemetery nearby. A cross will be erected over the grave. You can be cheered by the thought that your son did his duty and did it well. He has given his life it is true, but only to gain a higher one which will last forever. His sacrifice has been great, but you may be assured that his reward will be greater." Another son Private E. J, Cleary, left with the 7th Reinforcements, and according to latest advice is at present in hospital in Walton, England. The third son in the family goes into camp on January 8th.
