  • Son of Richard and Amy Ormsby, of Te Kuiti

"Next day, 2 October two barge parties, the first under 2nd Lieutenant D.G. Graham moved in as far as the coral growth would allow and men attempted to swim ashore with rations. Sharks were held off with tommyguns, Japanese snipers killed Lieutenant M.M. Ormsby in the water and wounded an American sailor..." - Official History of New Zealand in the Second World war. "The Pacific" by O.A Gillespie 1952 p 135.

"Lieutenant M.M Ormsby and Sergeant W.Q McGhie started to swim ashore with a line but Ormsby was shot dead. McGhie succeded and three men were hauled back to the barge." - "New Zealand at War" by K.R Hancock 1946 page 283.

"On Saturday, the sixth day, a barge returned with a rescue party on board. As it grated on the coral ledge offshore an artillery barrage was laid down just outside the perimeter of the beleagured troops while the main body of troops endeavoured to force their way overland in support of the rescue.

One of the beach party crawled and swam towards the barge. Flashes of fire came from the screening bushes as two more of the beach party slowly crossed those 300 yards. One man reached the barge and an officer (Ormsby) climbed over the side to help him in." "The 35th battalion" (UNofficial History). Anon. 1947 page 87. AWMM
