    Educated at New Plymouth Convent & New Plymouth Boys' High School.

    Was a member of the Aerodrome Defence Unit at Ashburton for 5 months from October 1942.

    Awarded Air Observers Badge, and promoted to Sergeant on 10 December 1943.

    Promoted to Flight Sergeant June 1944.

    At the time of his death he was navigator in an Avenger which was engaged in a strike against anti-aircraft gun positions near Tobera runway. The aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire and crashed. Both crew , Mathieson and Fl/Sgt A.F. Walker are thought to have lost their lives.

    His squadron in Bougainville completed 12 major and 12 minor strikes on enemy installations at Rabaul, Simpson Harbour, Vunapope, and Kieta Aerodrome area. AWMM
