  • James Makgill was the son of John Edward Makgill and of Muriel Ravenscroft Makgill (nee Devereux), of Auckland

    Attended King's College 1926-32, where he was a member of Town House, a school prefect and played rugby for the schhool.

    At the outbreak of war, he was in England and enlisted in the RAF. He flew with Coastal Command on fighter-bomber raids over France and Norway. He was selected to fly the first twin-engined Beaufighters to the Middle East. He failed to return from a special low-level attack at Mersa Matruh. AWMM
