Son of Albert and Edith Duder (nee Sanderson), his father was the Harbourmaster in Auckland.

Before the First World War Mr Duder worked for J. M. Ranstead. Originally he wanted to join up with the engineers in the army but there were no vacancies, so eventually he was posted to H Company, 17 Reinforcements on 29 May 1916. He marched into Sling Camp, Salisbury Plains on 21 November 1916 and left for France 24 April 1917. Next he marched into Camiers on 26 April 1917, then was posted to D Company of the Machine Gun Corps 2 June 1917.

In his own words to his daughter of his experience "I was shipped to France for the second Battle of the Somme. The great battle was that of Messines on 7 June 1917. On about the second day my gun was hit and two killed and some wounded, I was shellshocked but we carried the wounded to an advanced first aid station in an old German trench. After the first day I don't remember much for a while. ... When we were relieved after two or three nights of battle they got me back to a hospital, I was in and out of hospital in France. When I recovered they transferred me to the Battalion Headquarters behind the front near Ypres. ... I was updating plans and maps for our Battalion only, semi-secret work. ... Later I got a grumbling appendix."

After being discharged from various hospitals, he was in time for Passchendaele "I was on Hill 60 the 2nd day of Passchendaele, the muddy day, with some artillery officers on an abandoned German pill box. They knew we were there and were shelling it but we managed to hide at the rear and were safe. From the top we could see the poor troops floundering around in the mud."

Then he marched into NZ Infantry and General Base Depot, Etaples, 11 July 1918. From there he went to Torquay 1 August 1918. On Armistice Day he went to London to celebrate with a friend " We milled around Trafalgar Square, swapped hats and did ring-o-rosies etc. It was a wonderful occasion to be present at and we slept on the Embankment under a bridge. I went back to Hornchurch and from there to Codford to wait for a ship home." Finally he embarked for NZ on SS Bhamo from Glasgow on 10 March 1919 and arrived in NZ on 25 April 1919.

He was an inspector with New Zealand Insurance. During World War II he was part of the NAPS (Naval Auxiliary Patrol Service) with many of his fellow Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron members. They used their own launches etc. to patrol the gap in the boom at the entrance of the harbour from North Head to Orakei.
