  • John Moffat was the son of Oliver and Mary Moffat of Whangarei

The Northland roll of honour and servicemen of WW II notes he was the son of Mrs J.B. Bramble of Pukehuia.

Educated at Dilworth School, he joined the Navy just before he attained the age of 16 and after training was drafted to the Leander and then transferred to the Achilles, being a member of the crew when that warship was in action in the battle of the River Plate.

Leaving the Achilles through ill health, he joined an armed converted merchant ship on which he served for some time before being transferred to the naval base.

Later he was drafted to the Moa.

Reported missing on active service (presumed dead) on 7 April 1943 when HMNZS MOA was sunk in Tulagi Harbour, Solomon Islands AWMM
