  • Only son of Mr & Mrs H F Menzies of Rurimoki Road, Whangarei, and husband of Mrs K Menzies, theatre nurse, of Palmerston North.

    Born in 1915, he was educated at at Whangarei Primary and High Schools. He later attended Auckland University and the Dunedin Medical School. In 1940 he was awarded the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery Degrees. During 1941, he served as a house surgeon at the Palmerston North Hospital.

    Joining the Army as a surgeon in 1941, he was attached to the 10 Field Ambulance and later to the NZ Scottish Battalion. He went overseas to New Caledonia in 1942 and after 3 battalion was disbanded in July 1943 he returned to NZ for training in the operation of a mobile X-Ray unit.

    "Early in January 1944, came more changes in officer personnel...At this stage, too we welcomed...Captain John Menzies, the newly appointed raidiologist, whose untimely death occured only a few weeks later..." - "Shovel, Sword & Scalpel" (Unofficial History of Medical Units 2 NZEF IP) Anon. 1945 page 126.
