  • Enlisted first with the Army 13 June 1940 Army and then with the Royal new Zealand Air Force in 31 October 1942.

Graham's brother Russell wrote: 'Graham and I were together in D Company, machine gunners 1st Battalion, Wellington Regiment. We left together as sergeants, to join the RNZAF as trainee AC2s on 31 October 1942. We went through NZ and Canadian training together - and both qualified together as Pilot Officers (Wireless Operators) on 27 March 1944. We were then stationed together in London, Ontario as staff Wireless Operators. Next we were sent together to UK (on Mauretania 17 September 1944) as reserves to expected heavy casualties on invasion of Europe. We spent months being sent from 'drome to 'drome either together, or near each other - waiting posting to the same squadron, Bomber Command. Finally we were sent to No. 4 O.T.U. - Scotland as 2 wireless operators on the same Sunderland Flying Boat (Coastal Command). We were on final training when war finished - we were sent home on the same ship (Andes 15 September 1945) & have a newspaper photo of us together on the ship looking at Wellington.'

    Graham served 2 1/3 years - Army

    3 years 2months - RNZAF , total service 5 1/3 years
