      Hit by an exploding shell - severe back injuries with a gaping wound. Lay face down for three days until a temporary cease fire allowed stretcher bearers to remove the wounded. AWMM
    • These records are incorrect - his eyes were blue, as noted in his army admission document. The wound in his back was kept clean by countless fly maggots which ate the decaying flesh while he lay on the battlefield. My grandmother, Matilda, aka Tilly, said she could put her whole fist into the hole in his back after it had healed. Public - Bruce - Direct descendant - 1 April 2017 - I was 10 when Grandad died and I remember his bright blue eyes that were passed on to Gordon, my father. Nana told me the story about the maggots and the size of the hole when I was in my teens.
