  • Russell's son says 'During one tour in the Pacific, for a short period Dad was working with an American Search and Rescue Unit for 'downed' planes and aircrew. He was on a 'crash boat'. During one trip he dived down to a plane to make sure that the full crew was inside, which they were, and re-surfaced to find the boat-crew with weapons at the ready, as he was in shark-infested waters. Dad did not know the situation regarding sharks when he dived into the water. The position of the planes had to be recorded for later recovery of the bodies by specialised teams.' AWMM
