  • In WWII he lowered his age by 12 years to enlist and joined the National Reserve on its formation. He spent a period doing spare-time training with the Nelson Mounted Rifles. In 1941, he transferred to full-time duty with the NZ Temporary Staff. For a time he was attached to the Area 9 Quartermaster's staff.

    In 1942 he was appointed Provost Sergeant in charge of Military police duties in the Nelson District.

    In 1944,authorities discovered his true age to be nearly 69 years old and issued instructions for this release from service.

    In 1957, aged 80, he received a Long & Meritorious Service Medal and Annuity (Rooty Medal). AWMM
