During the battalion withdrawal from Maleme this N.C.O. asked to be allowed to carry back one of his men who had been badly wounded in the early stages of the withdrawal. The first part of his task was accomplished under enemy fire. He could not keep up with the rear-guard, therefore remained behind and carried the wounded soldier for two days behind the enemy lines. He became so exhausted in the end he decided to place the wounded soldier near a roadway and return to the unit, which he had accomplished, having to evade several bodies of the enemy in doing so.
