    • Son of James Kennedy Bogle and Annie Stafford Bogle of Middle Rd., Havelock North, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. Brother of Capt. Gilbert Vere Bogle and Gordon
      Bogle.

      Bogle embarked with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, the recieved an Imperial Commission, to the Royal Engineers. AWMM
    • Lieutenant George Stafford Bogle was raised in Waipukurau where his father, James Bogle, was the stationmaster. He attended Napier Boys' High and then Victoria College, Wellington from 1906 to 1908 studying Engineering. A sportsman in the family tradition, he played football for the Junior fifteen.

      After a spell with the Public Works Department in Whangarei he travelled in 1913 to Canada, where he apparently wanted to gain more experience. His application to join the Institution of Civil Engineers on 14 July 1914 states that he was working as a 'Draftsman in the Bridge Department of the Inter Colonial Rly Moneton N.B. Canada.

      On 23 September 1914, with the war just six weeks old, he presented himself at the new military training camp at Valcartier, near Quebec, and was passed fit for active service with the Canadian Expeditionary Force (Royal Canadian Engineers). He was one of 32,000 young men who signed up at Valcartier that month.
      G.S. Bogle's attestation papers show that he'd had four years serving in the N.Z. Territorials. He was 5’10½” tall and 25 years old. When the Expeditionary Force arrived in Britain, he took the Institution of Civil Engineers' examination applying for associate membership, and gained a commission with the British Royal Engineers.     • George Stafford Bogle was one of three brothers killed in WW1. The others were Surgeon-Captain Gilbert Vere Bogle (died 16-17 September 1916, outside Flers) and Gordon Kennedy Bogle (died Ypres, 14 October 1917). Their elder brother, Archibald Hugh Bogle, survived the war, fighting on the Western Front, and went on to serve in WW2.
