  • Had special rations in Prisoner of War Camp Stalag 8B

According to his wife "When the American spearhead came through, the prisoners guards had already slunk off into the bush. Ivo and his brother Harry went towards the sound of guns, saw an American tank straddling the railway line. They waved their "white" singlets at them, and said "Welcome to Germany". The Americans lifted the lid off the tank and said "Where the hell did you learn to speak English in the middle of Germany?" Ivo and Harry told them their fellow prisoners of war were just around the corner so the Americans blew up the railway line & came & liberated them. Ivo and Harry took a woman's bike to get to the American post. Ivo worried if the woman ever got her bike back."

Served in NZ 278 days and overseas for 4 years 104 days.

Received 50th Anniversary Commemorative medal. AWMM
