Citation for Mentioned in Despatches (MID): "Operations from 20th September 1916 to 26th February 1917. During the period that the New Zealand Artillery was at the Somme this N.C.O. displayed great courage under fire. On one occasion he guided ammunition wagons to the advanced position of the Battery in Devil's Valley, five hundred yards west of Delville Wood, when the roads were almost impassable owing to heavy shelling. Again on a later date he acted as guide and showed great courage and resource in guiding his wagons successfully through heavy barrage fire and in helping teams in distress. His gallantry and devotion to duty were an example to the other men." (London Gazette, 1 June 1917, p. 5429, Rec. No. 598) AWMM

  • Son of Robert and Ann Ellen Cobb, of Otaki, Wellington.

"Was well known in the Kumeroa district, having farmed there from the date of his leaving school. He went with the Main Body W.M.R., and in Egypt transferred to the 4th Battery, N.Z.F.A., thinking that he would have a better chance of reaching Gallipoli. Commonly known as 'Pompey,' he was a splendid soldier, keen, capable, and brave, and his death was a grief to the whole battery. Letters from which it is impossible to quote in full all speak of his extraordinary calm demeanour and great courage in the face of frightful odds. He never succeeded in landing on Gallipoli, being in charge of horses, though several attempts were made. Leaving for France he took part in all engagements from the Somme to Passchendaele, where he was killed on October 11th, 1917, while leading a gun up to an exposed position in support of the infantry during a very big push."
