  • Bill was a storeman with Harold Morton Auctioneer, Beverley Rd, Timaru before enlistment

All 3 Gilmore brothers fought in the War. Bob the eldest (21501, 21st Battalion); Les ( 62975, 21st Battalion); and the youngest brother Bill (7309, 27th Machine Gun Battalion).

Bill returned to New Zealand on second furlough on 11th February 1944, he was the youngest son. At that time he was thought to be the only child, of Alexander and Mary Gilmore, still alive. In 1941 their daughter Edna had died of TB, their son Bob was killed in Greece, and their other son Les had been wounded and was posted as 'Missing' (although it was believed that he was a POW).

The family doctor intervened, he felt that the family had suffered enough. At the medical examination, prior to returning to active duty, the doctor failed Bill on account of his flat feet and ill health.

Bill was subsequently discharged from active duty in June 1944. AWMM
