    MV Waimarama was part of a 14 ship convoy to participate in Operation Pederstal to the relief of the besieged island of Malta. The ship was sunk by German Junkers 88 dive bombers off Cape Bonn. Direct hits by 4 bombs ignited aviation fuel in the ships tanks and the ship exploded in a sheet of flame and smoke. In less than 5 minutes the ship was gone. Of 107 crew, only 27 survived. The ship sank at position 36 25 north and 12 00 east AWMM
