  • Attended Papatoetoe Primary and Otahuhu Technical College and later Auckland Grammar School. Was interested in football and cricket.

    Ronald was an orphan. Considered a fine young man, he was employed at Sargoods Office after leaving school as well as studying at university in the evening. Entering teachers' college in 1940, he was keen to enlist, but saw the wisdom in completing his year's work at college.
