"Gunner Scahill, who would have been 23 next month, was the son of Mr and Mrs Martin Scahill, of Henderson. He was born at Rotorua and came to Auckland about 13 years ago. He was educated at Seddon Memorial Technical College, where he studied engineering. He worked for a short time with his father, a timber merchant, and at the age of 17 joined J-Force. On his return he worked in Auckland as a truck driver. He played as a forward for the Waitemata Rugby Football Club. He was single." (NZ Herald, 22 November 1951, p. 8)

"The following night Chinese infantry again attacked the hill in strength after it had been pounded by artillery and mortar fire. There were heavy casualties among the infantry and Gunner J.M.C. Scahill, of Henderson, who was a member of the artillery observation party, was killed instantly." (NZ Herald, 23 November 1951, p. 8)

Gunner Scahill's niece, Mrs Lesley Verity Te Awamutu, received the New Zealand Operational Service Medal on his behalf from the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defence at a presentation at the Auckland War Memorial Museum on Thursday 27 November 2003 AWMM
