    • Son of Gertrude Caroline Isobel Bodmin (born in Wellington) and John Malcolm MacKinnon of Rangiriri

      Educated at Helensville District High School and Huntly District High School

      Hobbies were tennis, cricket. He played for the first eleven for Huntly District High School

      Attained the Senior Free Place Certificate in French, General Science and Mathematics (14 August 1935) from Huntly District High School.

      Douglas Mackinnon applied for enrolment in the Civil Reserve of Pilots in March 1939 but his application was unsuccessful.

      He entered the RNZAF aged 19 years old on the 9 April 1940

      Promoted to Sergeant

      No. 1 School of Army Co-operation, air gunner on Westland Lysander aircraft

      No. 2 Squadron, 9 September 1940, engaged on photographic and coastal reconnaisance

      Trained as an air gunner.

      1 May 1941: posted to 75 (NZ) Squadron at Feltwell, Norfolk, England.

      From the base at Feltwell he took part in 15 operations against various targets in Germany (Cologne, Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Kiel, Bremen), and installations at Brest in France.

      He was recorded as missing on 16 July 1941

      Total service from day of enlistment to death was 556 days (9 April 1940 to 16 October 1941)

      Name spelled as D.M. McKinnon on the school memorial board. 75 (New Zealand) Squadron was based at Feltwell, Norfolk, Britain in 1941. During 1941 75 (NZ) Squadron flew Wellingtons. May 1941 :75 Squadron are involved in raids over Hamburg, Brest and Cologne. There were submarine yards at Hamburg AWMM

      Date : 15/16 July 1941.
      RAF aircraft - Wellington IC R3171 - took off at 23:00 hours from RAF Base at Feltwell, Norfolk, United Kingdom with 6 crew aboard including 4 Kiwis. The aircraft took off with 8 aircraft from the same Unit/Squadron.
      Wellington Ic R3171 was lost without trace over the North Sea. It was believed to have been hit by German anti-aircraft fire. Only 2 bodies were recovered - including New Zealander Sergeant-Pilot Robert Fotheringham of Auckland. The rest of the crew are remembered at Runnymede Air Force Memorial, Surrey, United.
