Barry Martin was the son of Mr Francis B Martin and Mrs Martin (now A M Heaps) of Christchurch, was at St Andrew's College from 1918 to the end of 1925. After a period of study at University of Canterbury he joined the RNZAF and was sent to England to complete his training. He was posted to a Pathfinder Squadron and was lost on operations over Cologne on Februrary 2nd 1943.
