  • Barndt Mattson was the son of Barndt Henry and Amy Annie Mattson (nee Scobbie), of Hamilton East, New Zealand.

    Barndt Henry Mattson had served in the Boer War.

    Mattson was one of the five crew of the coaster SS Puriri, a minesweeper, killed when the vessel was sunk by mine.

    HMNZS Puriri was a mine sweeper. It sank off Bream Head when it hit a drifting mine. Five crew died and five were injured. In all 26 crew members were picked up.

    A commemoration scroll and memorial cross worn by Mattson's mother until she died, are items in the Auckland War Memorial Museum, no. 1. 'Our Small Ships' exhibit,' Scars on the Heart' exhibition. AWMM
