Missing since January of this year. Sergeant Lewis Edgar Mawson is now classified as presumed dead, according to advice received by his mother. Sergeant Mawson, aged 25 years, was the youngest son of Mrs M. Mawson, 116 Stafford street. He joined the R.N.Z.A.F. in 1939 and trained as a ground engineer. He was stationed at Wigram. Hobsonville and Hamilton before being transferred to a Pacific air station in February of last year. Sergeant Mawson was first reported missing when the aircraft in which he was doing a transit duty flight in January did not return to base. A report received by his mother refers to his high technical ability and speaks of him as a highly skilled technician, who was popular among his fellow airmen. He was educated at the Gisborne Central School and Gisborne High School and had completed his apprenticeship as a mechanic before going on service. Sergeant Mawson was secretary of the United Cricket Club, an active member of the Poverty Bay Motor Boat Club and of the Old Boys' Football Club. He was also a member of the Star of Gisborne Oddfellows’ Lodge, holding the position of recording secretary. A brother. Private M. L. Mawson; recently returned .from service in the Pacific, and a second brother, Mr. M. G. Mawson, resides in Greymouth Public - Lorraine Mona - Researcher - 7 May 2023 - ROLL OF HONOUR
