  • Harold McKinnon was the son of James and Annie McKinnon, of Whangarei, North Auckland, New Zealand

    Former first Town Clerk of Whangarei.

    Corporal McKinnon joined up the Coastal battery on the outbreak of war and later transferred to the Royal New Zealand Air Force. He was keenly interested in navigation and left for Canada to train as an observer.

    The circumstances of his death were vividly reported by one of his colleagues in a letter: "..three of our planes did not return. Two landed at aerodromes, but the third did not return at all. We have searched the whole of New Brunswick, assisted by US planes from Maine and the missing plane is now presumed lost. I'm afraid it went into the sea, due to engine failure or bad icing conditions during Monday night's storm."

    Over two months later the body of Corporal McKinnon was recovered from the sea and buried at Shediac, New Brunswick.
