    • Lloyd McCarthy was the son of Hugh Donald McCarthy and Alice Maud McCarthy, of Te Aroha, New Zealand.

Attended Marist Brothers School (Source: RNZAF Biographies (R17845613)) AWMM
    • P/O Lloyd Henry Roper McCarthy RNZAF lost his life on 14th August 1942 when he flew in Hurricane Z3261, He was serving with 253 Sqn; the 29yr old New Zealander was engaged in an interceptor training exercise when at 15.30hrs whilst making a steep climbing turn at 3000ft his fighter entered a spin and although control was recovered at 1000ft a spin in the opposite direction immediately followed and Z3261 crashed at Tetney, 5 miles SE of Grimsby. On September 20th 1987 the engine was recovered by the South Yorkshire museum and the hub was in such condition it was donated to the Battle of Britain Memorial flight and is now mounted upon Hurricane LF363, a regular visitor to the skies above Britain. Pilot Officer Lloyd Henry McCarthy a 29 year old New Zealander - who because of his "great age" was referred to as Uncle Mac. The Operation Record Book for Kirton in Lindsey does not record the demise of P/O McCarthy but a couple of days earlier it has an account of an incident where he was flying a Hurricane accompanied by a Havoc Turbinlite flown by S/Ldr Winn and P/O Harding when they had made contact with enemy aircraft. A burst of machine gun fire from the German gunner in the mid-upper position hit the Havoc in its starboard engine and also damaged McCarthy's fighter as he went in to the attack. Firing his machine gun until all his ammunition was used up F/Sgt McCarthy saw hits on the German fuselage, starboard wing and starboard engine. The bomber dived down, apparently on fire and a red glow was seen through the clouds soon after. In 1996 I met Bridget Barber a Motor Transport (M/T) driver who used to drive Uncle Mac out to his plane. One day he arrived with a spanking brand new bicycle and joked that he had got it to save the risk of being driven about by her. A few days later He left the bicycle propped up against her vehicle and asked her to look after it but sadly he never returned to pick it up. P/O McCarthy is buried in the Commonwealth War Grave section of Kirton in Lindsey Cemetery. RAF Kirton in Lindsey being the parent station to RAF Hibaldstow. Researched by Mrs Pat Horton of Hibaldstow and recorded in her Book of Remembrance for RAF Kirton in Lindsey and Hibaldstow - a copy is held in St. Andrew's Church, Kirton in LIndsey. Also remembered on the facebook group for RAF Hibaldstow ( Pat Horton admin) Public - Pat - Researcher - 14 August 2021 - RAF Kirton in Lindsey Operations Record Book - Commonwealth War Graves Commission - the late Robin Fletcher aviation historian - the late Bridget Barber - Motor Transport driver for 253 Sqn at RAF Hibaldstow. Collated into a Remembrance book of RAF Kirton in Lindsey and Hibaldstow wartime losses.
