  • My Mother Cheryl Henderson (nee McConnel) would show me this picture of him.

    His medal was sold. But a couple of years ago we saw it for sale on trademe and we bought it back. My mother now holds it

  • I am the grand daughter of Doris Eleanor Wilson (nee McConnel) who was Ernest's sister - she always referred to him as Owen. I remember this photo so clearly as Nanna had it proudly on her mantelpiece - dusted and polished it every week. I knew his story from a very young age. His death had a very profound effect on Nanna. I came across this site because my 9 year old son is doing a school project. We feel very honoured to be related to him.
