  • John Mehaffey was the son of Harold James Campbell Mehaffey and of Veronica Elizabeth Mehaffey (nee Turnbull), of Tauranga, Auckland, New Zealand.

He died in Crete when he flung his helmet over a hand grenade and then jumped on it in an attempt to save the lives of his two comrades. Both of his feet were blown off and he died soon after. Mehaffey was recommended for a posthumous Victoria Cross. ‘His behaviour and gallantry throughout the entire scrap until his final act of sacrifice was indeed of a high order.’ AWMM

  • A poppy laid for my Nana's (Kathleen Violet Heffernan nee Mehaffey) brother John but called Jack. From what I know and have read Jack died early on in the battle of Crete 1941 after bravely sacrificing his life for his comrades. If anyone reading this remembers Jack or stories about him will you please contact me by email. laurenbrunt@gmail.com
