  • Thomas Murray was the son of Thomas and Ethel Livingston Murray, of Picton, Marlborough, New Zealand.

He was educated at the Whau Valley Primary School and the Whangarei High School. He left in 1934 and joined the P&T Dept, where he gained the rank of telegraphist. Later he was transferred to wireless operating.

One of 17 murdered by the Japanese in the Tarawa atrocity.

At the time of his death he was one of seven officers of the Post and Telegraph Department, all young men who early in 1941 had volunteered for the coast watching service in the Pacific.

On duty in the Gilbert Island Group, Corporal Murray, with another New Zealander was captured, but succeeded in escaping, abandoning his intention on learning that the Japanese has threatened the natives with reprisals if they should leave the island. He then gave himself up and was executed by the Japanese along with 21 other Europeans.
