  • Flying Officer Neale's next of kin was Grace Greta Neale (wife), 5 Ventnor Road, Remuera, Auckland (information supplied by J. Reid).

Flying Officer Neale attested for military service at Levine, 2 August 1942. At the time of his enlistment, his children were 2 1/2 years and 5 days old.

Flying Officer Neale earned an Air Navigator Badge. He was posted to Blida (624 Squadron) on 8 March 1944. From this base as navigator of Halifax aircraft, he took part in 33 operational flights to the South of France and Italy from Maison Blauche.

"Flying Officer Leopold William Neale 425206 Squadron 624 was killed in service on his 35th birthday."

The Official History of New Zealand in the Second World War 1939-1945 notes that, despite difficult circumstances, Squadron 624 flew a remarkably high proportion of successful sortees delivering agents and stores to the Maquis. It is also noted that Flight Lieutenants Hynd and Garnett were distinguised by their consistency, while Flying Officer Neale and Pilot Officer Millar attained a high standard of navigation. AWMM
