  • From New Zealand Military Forces History sheet: 'Killed in a slit trench about 30 yards from the coastal road, S.W. of Galatos, Crete at a poisition on the extreme right flank of 18NZ Battalion on 25.05.41.' (7694 Cpl E.W. Payne and 3316 Cpl Westgate)

    British and Commonwealth losses on Crete amounted to 1,742 killed and missing. The troops had retreated from Greece. This was the first time paratroops by the enemy were used in combat. General Freyberg was in command of the battle. AWMM
