    • Douglas Newman was the son of James and Louisa Emily Newman, of Dunedin, New Zealand. AWMM
    • Served with 489 Squadron (18 Group - Coastal Command) - based at RAF Skitten, Caithness, Scotland.

      Whilst on an aerial patrol searching for enemy U-Boats - over the North Sea - at 2.17am the crew signalled by radio they were short of fuel and may have to land in the sea. At 2.20am a radio call was heard "Will have to land in the sea". The aircraft was not heard from again - with the loss of all 4 RNZAF crew members on board.

      The bodies of Sergeant Douglas Newman (Dunedin) was located near Husum - and Flight Sergeant Alexander Brown was located near Sylt.
