    • Ronald Payne was the son of Edward James Leslie Payne and of Agnes Payne (nee Knight), of New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand.

    • We share a common ancestry which will be fully outlined in my Book to be launched May 2019-"Progeny of Dunedin" - The family of Robert & Jessie (Walker) Findlay. 1862-1967 Ronald's mother Elizabeth " Ella" Agnes Knight was the daughter of Elizabeth "Eliza" Ann Taylor/Fyffe who married William Knight Stable keeper of Masterton or Ekatahuna ? Eliza came to NZ in 1883 to live with her Aunt Jessie Walker Findlay. Eliza's mother was Jessie's sister Elizabeth who remained in Aberdeen. Follow? Contact me if you wish , happy to explain , better still look for the book and chapter 10. I first started looking for descendants of Eliza in 1966 and only last week met one for the first time. Les Payne of Whangarei. That is 52 years later !!!!!! It was a Eureka moment. Public - Robert - Other relative - 23 October 2018 - Numerous sources which I not come to anything at the time of the 150th family reunion in Dunedin 2013. Wanting something conclusive for the Chpt 10-were their any living descendants I engaged the editor who is a genealogist to search some more. Using his report I got onto the phone only to discover a nephew of Ronald Edward of New Plymouth had died 3 yrs previously. But his widow steered me to his bro Les in Whanagrei and a few more phone calls and the rest is history as they say. !
    • Ronald Payne was the son of Edward and Agnes Payne of New Plymouth and attended Central School and New Plymouth Boy’s High School. He was a keen tennis player and won the Taranaki Junior Tennis Championship in 1939. In 1940 he applied to the RNZAF and began training in Levin, Bell Block, Ohakea before being sent to Canada for further training. His final training took place in England before he was sent to the Middle East in 1942. Here he took part in the offensive by 8th Army at Alamein where the Air Force provided a non-stop tide of patrolling and attacking every enemy aircraft within a wide range of the fast changing land war. During this fighting in bad weather on 22 November 1942 Payne was observed in an encounter with a German aircraft. He was reported missing and his body was never recovered. His name is commemorated on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt. He was 21. Public - Louise - Researcher - 21 December 2019 - West, J. (1995). Lest We Forget.
