  • Geoffrey Payton was the son of Edwin Allen and May Elizabeth Payton of Feilding, New Zealand.

Educated at Feilding Agricultural High School.

Sergeant Payton lost his life whilst instructing trainee pilots in Canada. He was killed while performing Night Circuits and Landings aboard a Crane I 7877. They climbed 300-500 feet after take-off at 0220, following which the Crane entered a right hand spiral dive and crashed 2 miles NW of the airfield. Both the instructor (Sgt Payton) and his RCAF pupil were killed. Examination of the wreckage revealed that the windows were completely frosted over with condensation. An instruction was subsequently issued providing for windows to be kept partially open until the drill of vital actions had been completed prior to take-off. AWMM
