  • Torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U515 (Commander Henke) part of the the "Westwall" patrol group of 17 war boats in the Atlantic, west of the Azures, in position 40.30 north 40.20 west. The ship was sailing independently on a a voyage from Liverpool to St Helena, Durban and Sydney NSW. The ship had 378 passengers including troops and 12362 tons of government stores and general cargo. The ship was dispersed from convoy ON 149, comprising 50 ships. The Master, Captain Herbert C Elford, 296 crew, 377 passengers (including troops) were all lost. The sole survivor, Sapper Eric Mundy, Royal Engineers, was rescued by the U515 and taken prisoner
