Believed to have worked on the Sumatra Railway/ AWMM
    • Ivan served aboard HMS Dragonfly. After escaping Singapore and en-route to Sumatra the ship was sunk off Singkep Island. They survived many hours in the water and countless strafing attacks from the Japanese. The survivors including Ivan managed to get to the island and find a boat which they used to escape to Sumatra. Once they had arrived in Sumatra they walked across half of the Island until they reached a small town called Muaro. From here they caught a train to Padang. Sadly the last ship had left and it was here that the Japanese caught up with them. They were taken to Medan in north Sumatra to the Gloergoer camp. Ivan and 2 other Kiwis, Noel Betley and Lawrence Hurndell were marched to Aceh to construct a road. Once this was completed they were transported over land to a place called Petai. This was the location of a coal mine on the Pekanbaru Death Railway. Ivan and the Aceh party worked on laying the rails for this line. Sadly Ivan died on the 20th April 1945, only 4 months before the end of the war. He was buried at camp 14A. The railway was used by the Japanese until 1946 to transport supplies and keep them out of the hands of the Indonesian Independence Army but this to disappeared into the jungle within a few years. Although the majority of the dead on this line were exhumed and moved to memorials throughout Java, the grave where Ivan Pardoe, along with 16 other Australians, Dutch, and British from 14A was lost and this is where they remain. GISBORNE PRISONER CAPTURE AT SINGAPORE Official advice has been received by Mrs Elizabeth Pardoe. Manutuke, of the death of her youngest son, Able Seaman Ivan Pardoe, while a prisoner-of-war in the hands of the Japanese. The notice states that investigations made by the R.N.Z.A.F. search unit operating from Singapore have established that Able-Seaman Pardoe was buried in the prison compound at Peti, about 20 miles from Khota Gharu, Sumatra. The report indicates that the date of death is unknown. Able-Seaman Pardoe was the son of the late Mr Edward Pardoe, and was born in Gisborne He received his education at the Manutuke School and later worked in the coal-mines of the Huntly field prior to joining the Royal New Zealand Navy. He left New Zealand for Singapore in September 1941, and was taken prisoner by the Japanese on the fall of that stronghold early the following year He communicated with his family twice in the course of his imprisonment, indicating that he was well, but the last card received from him came in 1942, and no subsequent information came to hand up to the time of the Japanese surrender Public - Lorraine Mona - Researcher - 28 July 2023 - SUMATRA BURIAL
