    • Alex Phillips was the son of James Frederick and Merope Phillips, New Plymouth.

      Attended New Plymouth Boys High AWMM
    • Alex James Phillips was born in New Plymouth of 4 November 1911. He attended Mimi School and New Plymouth Boy’s High School and then worked on the family farm at Waitoitoi. At the age of 30 he enlisted in the RNZAF in the Aerial Gunnery division and was sent to Canada for training. He was then posted to No 111 Operational Training Unit in the Bahamas for further intensive training on the two-engine Mitchell and the four-engine Liberator aircraft. He was promoted to Flight Sergeant before being sent to the United Kingdom and posted to Operational Squadron No. 224 where he served as Wireless Operator Air Gunner for 14 months until his death on 11 November 1944. On this day he was a member of a crew of a bomber aircraft which took off on an anti-submarine patrol over the Norwegian coast. The aircraft failed to return to base, subsequently his death of officially presumed. Alex Phillips is commemorated on the Runnymeade Memorial, England. He was aged 33.
