    • Details of last Air Operation 6-7 November 1940.

      Reason for Loss :

      58 Squadron Whitley V P4943 GE-P - with 5 crew aboard including RNZAF Flight Sergeant Reginald Prout of Masterton, New Zealand took off at 17.10 hours - from RAF Base Linton-on-Ouse, Yorkshire England - on air operation - 'Operation Hamburg'.
      At 00.18 hours - on their return journey the Wireless Operator transmitted an SOS message - since that signal was made nothing further was heard of P4943 or her crew.
      It was calculated they were approx. 10 miles off the Coast of Lowestaff - over the North Sea.
      As nothing further was heard of P4943 her crew were listed as missing - believed killed - despite searches being made for them.

      The crew - including Flight Sergeant Reginald Prout of New Zealand were

      1. Pilot-Officer Sgt Francis R. Elton (Surrey, England) - RAFVR 75485 - aged 19 (killed).
      2. Observer Sgt Edward A. Shapland (Enfield, Middlesex, England) - RAFVR746954 - aged 22 years. (killed)
      3. Wireless Operator- Air Gunner Sgt Lionel B. Breeze (Alton, Hampshire, England - RAFVR 75507 - aged 31 (killed).
      4. Wireless Operator-Air Gunner Sgt Granville Graham (Leigh, Lancashire, England) - RAFVR - aged 22 years (killed).
      All crew - of 58 Squadron RAF P4943 - are remembered on the Runnymeade Memorial, Surrey, England. Public - Jenifer - Researcher - 24 April 2019 - www.aircrewremembered.com (England).
