  • James Bathgate was the son of George Thomas Bathgate and of Eleanor Isabella Bathgate (nee Macnee), of Outram, Otago, New Zealand; husband of Dorothea Valentia Bathgate.

    "Flying Officer Bathgate had a varied flying career, including bomber operations over Europe with 214 Squadron and the Middle East with 104 Squadron, both in Wellington aircraft; duties with the Airborne Forces Experimental Establishment, England on Whitley, Wellington and Halifax aircraft; Liberator ferry duties to the Middle East with the 511 Squadron and secret missions with the 161 Squadron (Lysander) ferrying Allied agents to the Continent. It was while ferrying two French agents to target 'STEN', France on the night of 10/11 December 1943, that he failed to return." By Such Deeds, p. 77
