  • His wife says: 'Before Tony enlisted, because of his name, he was asked to sign some sort of loyalty form. He came home on furlough and while in hospital he was deemed AWOL, but other circumstances at that time cancelled the charges for him and others.'

She also says 'In 1955, Tony and 12 others of the 21st battalion met under the Maple Verandah, Karangahape Rd one Sunday. Thus was the start of the 21st Battalion Association. Membership swelled, as the troops were also joined by their officers and their Colonels.

In his retirement years, Cyril revisited England, Greece, Crete and Egypt, and also Germany where he was made welcome and stayed in an ex-paratrooper's home. He was, as an honour, nominated to become an honorary member of the Association of German Paratroopers' Inc. and had conferred on him their badge and Certificate as an appreciation of the fair and valiant combat of New Zealand troops on Crete - so another friendship was formed.'
