  • According to his grandson, Rick, 'John Mackay left Scotland, at the age of 18, and worked his passage to New Zealand as the ship's cook. He settled in Dunedin and worked as a cook for R. Mackenzie at the Excelsior Hotel. He enlisted and was declared fit for service on 11 November 1914, exactly 58 years to the day before his grandsons were born.

He served three months in Gallipoli before being wounded and invalided back to New Zealand. He was 21 years old.'

Rick thinks his grandfather saw action on Chunuk Bair in early August. The Otago Battalion took over from the Wellington Battalion on the night of 8 August. Otago held the lower slopes of Chunuk Bair for 24 hours with the Wellington Mounteds.

John was wounded during this time on 9 August 1915. AWMM

  • Grampy Mac, I have your great grand daughter, Jojo, showing great interest in your service on Gallipoli. She asks all sorts of questions. I'll be sure to keep her interest alive so your service is not forgotten. Rick
