  • Married Sybil Ruth Kirk. 2 daughters: Colleen Ruth and Janice Rosemarie.

Long term effect of war was insomnia.

    Transcript of letter. 6.2.43

    Dear Sybil,

I hope these things find you alright. The shops in Tripoli are nearly empty so I couldn't get what I wanted. The words on the handkerchief A esondo Della Libia, is souvenior [sic] of Libya in English. The knife is one I made myself, as a butter knife. It is synthetic glass, a piece of the windscreen of a German bomber, so you have a bit of the Luftwaffe in your posession [sic]. The other is a tablecentre I guess, but it might be anything I guess.

    Cyril

First embarkation was to Fiji on board the Ranagtira, escorted by the armed merchant ship the Monowai. was stationed in Fiji for six months. Returned on the Ranagtira with the Achilles as an escort.

Had ten days leave back in camp in New Zealand.

Later left Wellington on the Acquitania, disembarking at Port Tewfik, Egypt.

On the way back to NZ boarded the Argentina at the Adriatic port of Ancona and sailed for Bari. Then boarded the French Liner the Champollion for Egypt. Later boarded the Highland Brigade where onboard one man died of smallpox. For this reason was not allowed ashore when reached melbourne, Australia - the ship was seen to be flying the yellow flag of quarantine.

    Disembarked in Auckland

Served at total of 4 years & 305 days AWMM

  • Cyril Wigmore was one of my Dad’s [David Woodard Fletcher] close mates in the 21st Battalion North Africa Campaign , and later in the 5th Field Ambulance Italy Campaign. After the war he was one of my father’s groomsmen at my parents wedding. As a child I remember a number occasions when the Wigmore’s visited our home in Manurewa. I would really appreciate any contact with the Wigmore family to share any details of Cyril (and Dave’s) war service they have. I have my Father’s war photo’s, and memoirs, and war letters, some of which may be of interest to the Wigmore family .
